On day 4 of International Pea Week, Kate and Mandy talk to Hannah from Heartkids!Hannah is an amazing ‘Superpea’ – a twin mum with one twin who has complex medical needs due to a heart condition.

Hannah’s daughter was diagnosed with a hole in the heart and underwent open-heart surgery at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital at only seven days of age. Hannah talks about the whirlwind impact on her whole family of her newborn’s diagnosis and initial 5-week hospitalisation, and then the shock of finding out that the surgery had been unsuccessful, which meant they had to do it all again – leading to a long three-month recovery period for her daughter including time in intensive care. Hannah was able to stay at Ronald McDonald House and shares stories about the challenges of caring for her sick baby in hospital while also caring for her twin.

Hannah found great support through Heartkids. From helping Hannah deal with rectum situations in hospital initially to providing an ongoing community of care, they’ve been with the family from the beginning and have played an important role in their journey. Hannah’s daughter is now five years old, attending school and still receiving regular specialist treatment for her heart and also her lungs. Hannah talks about the real challenges of twin parenting when one of the twins has additional needs – the very reason why Kate and Mandy started Too Peas!

Kate and Mandy have a two-part ep focused on tech!

In Part A, we welcome Summer, Sandy, Tara and Steph from Kindship – an app that helps parents raising kids with disabilities, delays and neurodiversity to connect. Fostering a growing grassroots community, the app has key features that allow parents to find new connections, share information and join in audio live chats in real time. The team talk all about their kids, their roles and all of their plans for growing Kindship even further. Ultimately, they’re aiming to change the narrative around parenting kids with disabilities and additional needs while empowering parents to share the realness, advocate and create lasting systematic change. Discover everything about Kinship via their website and follow them on Instagram.

In Part B, we welcome Dr Kathryn Hackman, mum of two boys and creator of Courageous Kids – a parenting app that allows parents to create personalised stories to explain and discuss new experiences with their kids. Designed with the help of a child psychologist and OT, the app aims to provide families with more preventative and supportive tools to tackle childhood anxiety and help kids prepare for change while also learning to identify and express emotions. One of the most unique functions of the app is its personalisation features. Parents can replace the story illustrations with their own photographs, and customise the text, increasing their child’s familiarity with new people and situations. Importantly the child is the hero of each story!

Kathryn shares her reasons behind developing the app and her hopes and dreams that the app will provide all kids with the emotional support that they need when they need it, while also opening up thoughtful discussions that help to strengthen the bond between parents and kids. Get all the info on Courageous Kids via their website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

Kate and Mandy talk to Hannah English – pharmaceutical scientist, science communicator and skinfluencer! Along with all of these credentials, Hannah also has ADHD and autism, which she was diagnosed with only recently as a young adult.

Hannah’s journey included studying pharmaceutical science and working in drug development before deciding to work in science communication in order to make a better impact, and pursue her interests in beauty and skincare. Prior to her successful experiences of tertiary study and career progression, Hannah had a challenging time while on a scholarship at an elite private school as a teenager, where she had to navigate class and wealth differences while also experiencing bullying and social challenges. She also had a tough time with a bad boyfriend and invested in regular weekly therapy to heal and find her way forward.

Fast forward to now and Hannah has nearly 60,000 followers on Instagram after going viral on a post about sunscreen! She’s also released her own sold-out make-up and skincare products and has a booking coming out in June 2022 – Your Best Skin: The Science Of Skincare. Hannah talks about the practical ways she’s been able to achieve these goals while also managing her neurodivergence through medication and other supports, and how she’s also working her way through how to best integrate her lived experience with her social media presence.

Find out more about Hannah via her website, including all of her recommendations for great products that will help you take good care of your skin. Check out her TikToks too!
