Today Kate & Mandy are talking with Pea Monique, who has two children both diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome. Fragile X Syndrome is one of a family of conditions caused by a mutation (change) to the FMR1 gene on the X chromosome. Fragile X syndrome can cause a wide range of difficulties with learning, as well as social, language, attentional, emotional, behavioural and medical problems. The effects of Fragile X syndrome on an individual vary and can range from mild to severe. Monique talks about how the diagnosis affected her wider family it being a genetic condition, navigating NDIS and schools, her post-natal depression after her daughter was born, and how funny and cheeky her children are.

Lisa is a fierce disability advocate and is constantly actively changing the way disability is represented in mainstream popular culture – like the media, fashion industry and more. Lisa shares her story about what happened on the day of her stroke, the long recovery phase both physically and mentally, and how she became the amazing disability advocate she is today.

Kate & Mandy are talking to Jamila Rizvi; author, editor, presenter, podcaster, political commentator and mum of Rafi. She describes herself as “pea adjacent” having an acquired disability. At the end of 2017 she was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. She had 36 rounds of radiation and two brain surgeries, which has done damage in that area of her brain causing a range of issues broadly due to the fact that her pituitary gland doesn’t work.

  • Jamila’s favourite music is from her best friend and musician Clare Bowditch
  • Jamila’s latest book she edited with Helen McCabe is Untold Resilience, stories of courage survival and love, from women who have gone before.
  • Her daily podcast is called The Briefing (hosted by Tom Tilley with regular rotating co-hosts Jan Fran, Annika Smethurst and Jamila). Now Jamila does The Weekend Briefing, with the episodes being released through The Briefing podcast.

In this episode Kate and Mandy are speaking to Paralympic gold medalist and two-time Commonwealth game gold medalist Kurt Fearnley.

After a bit of fan-gushing, you will find out that Kurt is much more than a sporting legend. They talk about Kurt’s new podcast A Nation Changed, which tells the story of one of the greatest social reforms in Australia’s history: the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Starting with former prime minister Julia Gillard getting this funding scheme through parliament in 2013, this is a very important story that needs to be told so please go and listen!

Kurt also hosts a podcast called Tiny Island.
